I couldn't believe what I was reading. There was actually a congressman from CA(I need not disclose his party, as you will guess it) who thought the "very rich" should be taxed 90%. Well, as much as I strive to be in the "very rich" category, I for damn sure don't want to fall into his definition of "very rich".
I scratch my head and wonder when this country got to the point in which success was punished. The Constitution guarantees us "life, liberty, and the PURSUIT of happiness", NOWHERE does it say we are guaranteed equal results. I guess I yearn for the days where people envied the rich instead of wanting them to be punished. Not that I condone envy, but its hard to want someone else's wealth and ignore their tax bill.
Though I am not the best debater in the world, nor am I the most eloquent, there is a "sure-fire" argument that I have found works against those "punish the rich" liberals. Just pose this hypothetical situation:
Imagine you went out and spent $1 on a lottery ticket and won. You win a million dollars. Now, how much in taxes do you
feel you should pay on that? If they answer honestly, they will say ZERO. Now ask them how much they should pay if they went
out and busted their butt for that money. Some will say ZERO(which isn't realistic), others won't answer, then the rest might come
up with some obsecure percentage. But I guarantee you that NO ONE will say 39%.
Why did I choose 39%? Well, that is the amount our wonderful new president wants to take from your paycheck if you fall into his definition of "rich". "Rich" is relative. Now that this stimulus bill is passed and in it are millions of dollars in tax breaks to Hollywood, isn't it only fair that the government puts a cap on how much an actor or actress can make? Since we are telling CEO's how much they can make, why should we stop there?
Speaking as a person who by no one's definition is "rich", that I realize I cannot grant the goverment the power to put me in a class. I don't want to be labeled as "rich" or "poor". I control my future, the goverment needs to just step aside and let me succeed or fail on my own.
